Oliver Ressler at Art Papers Live

| February 14th, 2012

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending Art Papers Live’s screening and lectures of Oliver Ressler’s work, titled “We are the ones we have been waiting for.” Ressler is a documentary filmmaker who covers the anti-globalization movement. What follows is an account on a different approach to political art. //

why gray matters

| January 25th, 2011

The color gray (or grey, for the rest of the world) is something that, like its phonoaesthetic qualities, is quite vague in its use. It’s recursive in its sound and its operation. It’s what’s left when you take out the black or white, or when you put them together. It’s something that is easy to explain conceptually, but difficult to realize otherwise. Gray has its place in philosophy, ethics, literature and even sexuality, amongst other things. We’ll look at what gray encompasses (perhaps a rough idea), and its importance to designers and design students, not necessarily as a color, but as an overall framework for the design process.

Beautiful game, ugly response

soccer/review

Joshua Prince-Ramus once spoke of how the modernist floor plan and organization were a shot in the dark, and anything can happen there. The West Architecture building is a great example. One should look at the atrium to get a firm sense of how anything can happen. From reviews to tutorials and even Glee Club concerts, one could say our atrium is a modernist success. Even though the acoustics tend to project sound into adjacent studios, we’re used to the cacophony of the atrium.

Except during soccer practice.

Future Plural

| September 19th, 2010

What does the 21st century quarantine zone look like? Is beeswax a good veneer material? In Future Plural, Geoff Manaugh and Nicola Twilley asked such eccentric questions and asked many more. //

Freeway Flaneur

| September 8th, 2010

Experiencing the city requires two sturdy legs. What about a set of wheels? Most urbanists can’t imagine a city that primarily caters to cars and provides cultural exchange. But is there a culture in driving? And if so, how does it come about?

Design Problem 1 from Arch Design Studio 2 dealt with the nine-square problem, in which students were asked to design a pavilion for the College of Architecture. While its programmatic requirements were minimal, the problem asked students to rethink how materials were used and create some performative aspects of building.

Looking back at Sense & Sustain -Ability

| April 26th, 2010

Tim Frank’s exhibit at MODA, titled Sense & Sustain -Ability, will close in a couple of days. Having been showcased for a month, Frank’s three projects concern the ideas of superimposition, infusion, and opposition. Using a variety of media, Tim presented three projects that were more than products, but exhibits of the breadth of the design process. From understanding the site in terms of climatology, using software like Ecotect, or depicting concrete in his models through his own clever mixture, Frank’s exhibition stayed true to its title. Sense and Sustain -Ability reassigned meaning to two terms that are too often misused.

In any case, words alone don’t do his exhibition justice. Enjoy select photographs and leave comments if you went or want to know more about his work, in which case you should see Tim Frank online.

the idea of the portfolio

| March 8th, 2010

portfolioFor some undergraduates and graduates, the assembly of a portfolio seems to be the signal for some oncoming doom. However, there aren’t many classes that teach what the ideal portfolio looks like, and even less transfer the theory of architecture into the architecture portfolio.
